13 days and counting…
March 7, 2011

Yes, yes, my life is consumed by plans for the baby shower, so I will be torturing you with my thoughts for a bit longer. I can’t tell you how excited I will be to finally be done though…NOT because of why you’d think however…I’m just excited to see all the elements finally come together! I can’t wait to see how everything looks and interacts with each other.

Things are coming along pretty well. I spent my Friday night gluing tags onto popsicle sticks and then buttons onto the back to add a little sweetness. When I was done with this I spent about an hour gluing tiny flowers onto toothpicks for my personal dirt cake pots. I’m pretty sure my sister-in-law thinks I’m insane, but what can I say…I’m a creative…and who are we kidding…we are all a little neurotic.

This evening I spent an hour or so sewing buttons onto the sticks that I’ll be gluing my paper flowers on to, to make the smaller table arrangements. Tomorrow my husband and I will be spray painting the umbrella pieces for the street sign as well as the little ‘Mommy-2-Bee’ lettering that will go in the cupcake garden centerpiece…which, I must say, I’m super excited to see! I found what I think will be my final idea though while I was looking for some inspiration on Hostess with the Mostess. Not only will it be a cute decoration for the nursery, but how fun for guests to be able to write a special message to the sweet lil’one that’s on his way?!

Up to my ears in photos…
March 5, 2011

Along with trying to pay the bills I’ve been tirelessly working to get my website up and going…and by that I mean, getting everything assembled creatively so that I can have my genius left-brained friend set up all the coding…bless his heart. Going through all my work, matting everything, and doing some modifications has been a task in itself though. I’m getting there, but still have quite a ways to go.Ā  For the most part, the bulk of the remaining work is my photography. I’m still in the process of developing this passion, but it’s been a lot of fun to go through the library I’ve developed so far. And I can’t wait to get out and take some pictures of my new home. It’s so incredibly beautiful here. I’m not sure if there will every come a day when I don’t gasp in amazement of how majestic the mountains look when I walk out the front door. In honor of my desire to get out and document my new surroundings (since I haven’t yet allowed myself the time to go out and do so) here are some of my favorites photos that I’ve gone through so far. Feel free to check out the rest or any of my other work on my website…Kern Concepts…more to come soon…hopefully šŸ™‚

Bursting with inspiration…
March 4, 2011

Planning this baby shower for my sister-in-law has been a real treat. Since my husband and I don’t own a home yet, I’m not able to do a lot of party planning. I’ve been dying to throw a party for quite some time and this experience only reiterates my desire to plan more in the future. Hmmm, I see many themed birthday parties in my children’s futures…hypothetical children for now…but wonderfully themed parties non-the-less. Sounds like reason enough to start trying šŸ™‚ Easy Mom, just kidding.

Speaking of my mom though, I had a wonderful conversation with her tonight and she really helped get my creative juices flowing. My husband has offered to make some mini cupcakes or, as he has coined them, ‘Cake Shots’ for the baby shower along with my personal pots-of-dirt cake. After talking with my mom however, I realized that the cake is usually the focal point of the table. Since I haven’t really had time to think about how the cake shots would be displayed, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to start brainstorming. And ta-da, the idea for a cake shot flower garden was born. I think this will be the perfect touch to the food table. Now to go out and pick up some wheat grass tomorrow. Grow baby grow!

Here are some images I found online for inspiration. I’ll of course add some photos of the final product. Wish me luck šŸ™‚

Yuuummmmyyyy Color…
March 3, 2011

So I realized that a lot of my blogs lately have been a bunch of non-sense babbling from me…which, really, who wants to hear that? No need to worry though, today I am throwing up some more delicious color palates from Design Seed. What I wouldn’t give to meet some of their creative team…or, gasp, to work with them! I imagine it has to be as much fun as the people who are in charge of coming up with names for the newest nail polish and cosmetics. Names like ‘Teal the Cows Come Home’ by OPI or ‘Suzie & the Lifeguard’, also by OPI. I would have to name my first shade, ‘Too Hot to Dodge’ or ‘I Hate Fartleks’. Any takers?

Heart and Soul…
March 2, 2011

I recently fell in LOVE with an artist named Adele. Her new album, 21 was just released and I’m dying to get my hands on it. The strength and beauty that resonates in her voice is almost spiritual. Her passion, and emotion are unmistakably heartfelt. I feel as if I’ve touched her soul every time I listen. I am blessed to have discovered such a strong, powerful, beautiful soul. Check her out.

The heart of my free spirit…
March 1, 2011

I’m still struggling to find my place in our new home. I LOVE it here, but I find that it’s difficult some days to keep my old fearful self from keeping in. Today though, the straw finally broke the camels back. I AM DONE stressing with Michigan drama that I have no control over. I AM DONE going back and forth about things that are not important. I AM READY to move on and look ahead. That’s why we moved out here…and it’s time to get back on that wagon.

S-o, in order to clear my head and lift my spirits, I am finally going to take a break from work and get out and enjoy something for myself. I’ve been dying to take some pictures out here and, while I don’t need an excuse to go breath in the beauty of some horses…I’m promising myself to get out to the horse farm sometime this week. In honor of this promise I Googled some horse photography. Breathtaking.

A thing of beauty. A thing of devastation.
February 28, 2011

Yes, that’s right, I’m talking about you computer that I’m working on…keyboard that I’m typing on…and mouse that, well, you’re just sitting there right now, but I will be using you to finalize the publishing of this post. I took you in this weekend…for the 2nd time in the last 2 months. You looked so beautiful sitting there at the Genius Bar. So much larger, so much brighter than the others. I was so proud. You are mine. You allow me to explore my creativity. You provide an infinite source of inspiration. You keep me company during my sleepless nights of bursting creativity. Those nights that I can’t help but toss and turn until finally, I pull myself out of the toasty covers. IĀ  give in to the realization that there’s no hope in sleeping until I click File Save. But, best friend of mine, while your beautiful sleekness shines above all else, I must warn you, if you ever give me the spinning beach ball of death again, or start pogo-sticking my programs until I am forced to Force Quit because they are not responding, then that day may be your last. I do not wish to replace you. You are my baby. I love you. And I need you. I need you to let me explore my inspirations and develop my creative spirit. You inspire me every day. I am not ready to share that with someone else. But if you do not start behaving I will be forced to exchange you for a new, bright and shiny friend.

Finally at home…
February 27, 2011

What a fantastic evening. Along with going out for some drinks and creole food with my husband and my brother…I finally found my place. It’s been a little difficult here at times, since we left our local hangouts in the GRrrr, but finally, after 2 months of being in the area…I found my place to go when I have a bad day…or I need a glass a wine…or some phenomenal food…a place where every-o-n-e knows your name. Okay, a little far, but I’m telln’ya…The Bayou in Salt Lake City is most definitely my new local hangout. The service was exceptional, the food was to-die-for, and the drink menu…well, let’s just say that they made a point to note that ‘these beers aren’t 3.5% alcohol’. Don’t get me wrong, if you’re looking for a Bud Light, well, they got em’, but if you’re from Michigan and you’re looking for a beer that you can chew through, well, they have those too. I think the thing that got me the most though was the service…and the patrons. I’ve never talked to so many strangers at a bar in my life. Now, maybe it was the booze, but really, I’d like to think that’s it’s just the difference in social atmosphere than that in Michigan. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVED our local hangouts in Grand Rapids…and I would give anything to be back at Graydon’s for food, and Reserve for drinks, and 616 for, well anything…but really, overall, the people out here have been a lot more open to conversation and personable with strangers. It’s been a pleasure to open up to new people out here. And I look forward to all the opportunities to come. Bayou here I come.

Slowly but surely…
February 26, 2011

Well, I’ve definitely had my days where things just seem to be going backwards. One step forward…two steps back. But, today was not one of those days. I’m slowly making progress on my personal endeavors and while I’m not at the finish line yet, I’m enjoying the race. I recently was accepted to sell some work on an up-and-coming Stationary site called Matilda Plum. It has adorable baby announcements and photo cards…and of course, my work! šŸ™‚ I’m still in the process of developing pieces, but I’ll keep you updated on how it goes. Check the site out…Matilda Plum…especially if you’re in need of some cute announcements.

On a side note…how lucky am I to have such a beautiful niece to photograph…I’m not sure if it’s my work or her cute little face that will sell these šŸ™‚

The infamous battle between the right and the left…
February 25, 2011

Ahhh, to be right brained or left brained…I find it similar to the question ‘Do blonds really have more fun?’ It seems just as arbitrary at times. Take me for example…

I AM a creative…which defines me as right brained. I AM emotional, I AM passionate, I AM a dreamer, I AM anything I imagine…and my imagination is endless.

B-U-T…dun, dun, dun…then I look at the left brain. I AM a planner, I AM a list maker, I AM practical, I AM in search of control and order.

So, what am I? Am I blond? Do I really have more fun?

I AM me.

A special thanks to my RockStar brother-in-law for sending me this amazing illustration. To be able to let your mind wander like that…amazing!
